Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE)

Representing the forefront of gastrointestinal diagnostics, double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) enables us unparalleled access to the small intestine. With Dr Dale Peterson’s expertise in this procedure, you can confidently seek answers to your digestive concerns and conditions.

What is DBE?

This cutting-edge endoscopic procedure offers a detailed look inside the small intestine. The technique involves using a thin, flexible tube known as an endoscope fitted with two balloons — one at the tip and another on a longer tube called the overtube.

By alternately inflating and deflating these balloons, Dr Peterson can progressively advance the scope into deeper regions of the small intestine, providing a comprehensive view of areas once challenging to see.

Why is DBE recommended?

Diagnostic balloon enteroscopy plays a crucial role in diagnosing particular GI tract disorders, including:

  • If you have unexplained GI bleeding, DBE can pinpoint the exact source within the small intestine.
  • DBE offers a direct view, helping to detect and sometimes remove polyps or tumours.
  • Certain conditions can be better understood with the visualisation capabilities of DBE.
  • When standard tests don’t provide answers, DBE serves as an advanced diagnostic tool.

How can I prepare for my DBE procedure?

You will receive a comprehensive guideline to ensure you are ready and set for your procedure. These are some of the ways you can ensure your procedure goes smoothly:

  • Dietary adjustments — You will usually need to follow a clear liquid diet the day before the procedure.
  • Fasting — To ensure a clear view, avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight on the day before the procedure.
  • Discuss medications — Let Dr Peterson know about your current medications. Certain drugs, especially blood thinners, may need adjustments.

How does the procedure work?

Having a DBE is similar to a traditional gastroscopy or other diagnostic gastrointestinal procedures, with the exception of the dual-balloon system. Dr Peterson will ensure your comfort by providing a local anaesthetic for your throat and a light sedative to help you relax.

  • Dr Peterson will carefully slide the endoscope down your oesophagus and into your small intestine.
  • The dual-balloon system allows us to navigate and inspect the entirety of the small intestine, and images will appear on a monitor linked to the endoscope camera.
  • During the procedure, collecting tissue samples or addressing any observed abnormalities might be necessary.

The entire procedure can take 1-2 hours, and you can leave once the sedative has worn off, but you will need a lift.

Are there any complications involved?

When performed by experts like Dr Peterson, DBE is a safe and effective procedure. As with all medical procedures, there’s a risk of complications, though they are scarce.

Dr Peterson is committed to bringing the best in GI diagnostics. With DBE, he offers a detailed, thorough examination of the small intestine, ensuring that underlying conditions are identified and addressed with precision and care.
